A poor became a mountain mover!
Manjhi was a poor labourer in an Indian village. who carved a path through a mountain using only a hammer and chisel. There is a mountain in his village as a hurdle to reaching a big town for medical care.
One day, his wife, who was heavily pregnant, was taking lunch for her husband to the fields, for which she needed to climb the mountain in the scorching heat. Unfortunately, her foot got slipped and she fell down from the mountain, Manjhi run into panic and took her blood-splattered wife to the nearest hospital that was 70 km away, where she was declared brought dead, but she gave birth to a baby girl.
That tragedy changed his life. The heart-broken Manjhi, who loved his wife more than anything else in the world, decided to carve a path through the mountain so that his village could have easier access to medical attention. He did not have any money or power but he started breaking the rocks by hand tools only.
His life gives a moral lesson that a small man, who has no money and no power can challenge a mighty mountain. Manjhi’s firm determination to carve the huge mountain gives out a strong message that every hurdle can be crossed if one has kept a firm eye on his goal. His 22 years of hard work became a success, as the road constructed by him is, now used by villagers. Manjhi shortened travel from 55 km to 15 km.
Now the question is why he did hard work for 22 years to break a mountain!?
Manjhi did not have any power or money, even food or water also. He was very poor. His wife died from lack of medical care. No one was in his life to care for. This is the humanity that he did not want other humans to die the same way or lack of medical care. He worked hard to break mountain for 22 years to make an easy life of others!
His life gives a moral lesson that a small man, who has no money and no power can challenge a mighty mountain. and every human should think for the goodness of others also.
This poor man (only in economic view) is an epitome of willpower, courage, strength, and dedication towards the only worthy goal of his life. People called him mad but he completed his work single-handedly. He is the symbol of determination. And inspires many to walk forward without fear and care that what others are telling.
As Gurudev Tagore said in Bangla…
